Oxygen Concentrator Maintenance for Long-Term Performance and Safety
An oxygen concentrator is a vital medical device designed to deliver consistent and concentrated oxygen to individuals with respiratory conditions. Since the machine operates continuously for extended periods, regular maintenance is essential to ensure it remains efficient, safe, and long-lasting.
Routine Maintenance Guidelines
1. Clean and Replace the Air Filters
-
The air filter prevents dust and particles from entering the system.
-
Foam pre-filters (coarse filters) should be cleaned every 1–2 weeks using clean water and allowed to dry thoroughly before reuse.
-
HEPA or fine filters (non-washable) must be replaced every 6–12 months, or sooner depending on usage and environment.
-
Replace the filter if it changes color or becomes visibly dirty.
2. Bacterial Filter Replacement (if applicable)
⚠️ Note: Most oxygen concentrators do not include a built-in bacterial filter. Please check your model specifications.
3. Cannula and Oxygen Mask Cleaning
-
Clean daily and replace every 2–3 months to prevent bacteria buildup.
-
Always have a spare cannula and mask available. Replace if discolored or hardened (e.g., turns yellow).
4. Humidifier Bottle Care
-
Use medical-grade distilled water or clean drinking water.
-
Refill to the indicated level and change the water daily.
-
Clean the humidifier bottle every 2–3 days to prevent bacterial growth.
-
Avoid overfilling, and replace the bottle if it becomes cloudy, cracked, or discolored.
5. Oxygen Purity Check
-
A properly functioning concentrator should produce oxygen with a purity level of 90–95%.
-
It's recommended to:
-
Use a pulse oximeter to check the user's oxygen saturation.
-
Test oxygen concentration at least once a year or sooner if oxygen flow seems weak or abnormal.
-
6. Internal System Inspection (by qualified technician)
Key components that require annual inspection include:
-
✅ Compressor
-
✅ Cooling fan and motor
-
✅ Power supply and internal wiring
These parts wear over time and should be tested to ensure safety and efficiency.
When Should You Service Your Oxygen Concentrator?
-
The machine becomes unusually loud.
-
Oxygen output decreases noticeably.
-
Alarm or warning signals appear on the display.
-
The user feels they’re not receiving enough oxygen flow.
⚠️ Do not continue to use a faulty machine. Contact a service center immediately.
